Slowly but Surely

Now we all know the best place to curl up is a nice shiny shell, but I realise that is not an option for everybody.  Apparently some people are discovering the benefits of a silk filled duvet when it comes to a good night's kip.  So what is so special about them?

It is virtually impossible to say precisely when the manufacture of silk began, however there is evidence of silk manufacturing or ‘sericulture’ as it is termed, as far back as 7000 years ago. The Chinese fiercely safeguarded the mysterious secrets of silk making for hundreds and thousands of years. It was an offence carrying the death sentence to attempt to traffick silk or expose the mysteries of its production outside of China. It was probably inevitable that the mysteries of silk production would be desseminated all over the globe sooner or later and today the splendid luxuries afforded by silk can certainly be appreciated by all of us. The extraordinary natural qualities of silk partnered with modern advanced silk duvet production techniques creates a duvet that seriously will improve the way you sleep. In the course of the manufacturing process layers of long fibre mulberry silk floss will be placed one on top of the other to create the strong but soft and sensuous filling. This technique is repeated until finally the preferred weight is attained. A silk filled duvet is the best you can get when it comes to comfort. The chemistry of long-strand silk fibers ensure a silk duvet is just as warm but considerably lighter than standard duvets. A silk duvet gently swathes the body as opposed to "imprisoning" you with the weight of a conventional duvet. After people have felt the gentleness and complete luxury of a silk duvet it's quite difficult to think about sleeping with anything different.

Silk is in fact a protein and so is far less welcoming to dustmites that may cause allergic reactions including asthma, eczema and rhinitis. As many as 20, 000 dust mites have been found in a single mattress. Making a bed with silk filled duvets substantially lessens the amount of dust mites in the bedroom, in contrast to down, feather and polyester . Dust mite droppings contain enzymes which the mites have used to help them digest skin dust. These digestive enzymes, often by means of inhalation or direct contact with skin may cause or aggravate asthma and other associated allergies. Silk has an extraordinary capability to enable our skin to reabsorb moisture through the naturally occurring amino acids within silk, although without making you feel sticky or unpleasantly wet. Absorbing moisture that your skin loses throughout the day will aid in reviving your skin throughout the night. This is valuable to people with dry skin and problems such as shingles, eczema, psoriasis and post chemotherapy sensitivity.

Silk can noticeably enhance the quality and comfort of sleep at night. As well as preventing asthma triggered by dust mites, it is moreover helpful to those afflicted with osteo-athritic conditions. Silk filled duvets being soft and light-weight create less pressure this, especially partnered along with tightly woven silk bed sheets, enables easier mobility and less resistance. Conventional duvets and bedsheets do not drape over our bodies but instead form a bulky barrier with pressure points that can easily cause pain and irritation to arthritic joints. Silk filled duvets deliver alleviation for lots of skin conditions as they drape over your body eliminating single spots of pressure that could otherwise aggravate existing skin problems. The health benefits don't just stop there. Silk, as opposed to cotton that holds moisture underneath sheets causing sweats, draws excessive moisture away from the body. This is valuable to anyone suffering from excessive sweating, night sweats, the menopause and even mild incontinence, guaranteeing a better night’s slumber.

Silk production, the silk duvet manufacturing process and caring for your silk once you have bought it is natural and chemical free. These natural production processes, in conjunction with silk’s natural bacteria repelling attributes and dust-mite resistance makes the silk filled duvet the perfect choice for those who think about their well being and the overall health of the earth. Production starts off with mulberry trees - the the chosen fodder of the silk moth caterpillar. This is a trouble-free crop to grow, not usually necessitating the use of pesticides, herbicides or fungicides. Chemical use is virtually unneccessary, except in cases where there is excessive use of inorganic dyes, and this is not the story with silk filled duvets. Silk production and processing has a relatively low impact on the environment. Silk filled duvets are naturally anti-bacterial and will not need cleaning in the same way as conventional duvets. (You won’t miss trying to stuff those into a washing machine drum!) Silk duvets simply entail ’sun curing’ to put it simply, hang your duvet out to air twice yearly, a fine day in Springtime or a warm Autumn afternoon. This is definitely eco-cleaning at its finest!
