High Rise Eating - Raised Garden Beds 07/08/2011
Now Goo has spent the last two years building raised garden beds. You have to admire her I suppose, but I'm finding this whole raised garden bed thing somewhat troublesome. I'm not accustomed to having to climb so high for my daily fix of lettuce seedlings. It really is quite vexing and I can't help thinking she has built these raised garden beds purposely to keep me out. What do you think? Oh I know she'll tell you she built the raised garden beds to overcome drainage problems with her heavy clay soil and that nowadays she can grow perfectly straight carrots thanks to these new high rise eateries, but I know where I'm not wanted! Goo will probably ramble on about the benefits of no-dig gardening and all those lovely micro-organisms forming wonderful symbiotic relationships with the roots of her much loved veggies and how the whole thing is a veritable smorgasbord of bio-diversity! (If you don't include gastropods that is!!!! I am well put out! Quite literally.) She will tell you how easy her raised garden beds are to manage and how they give her erstwhile wild and free garden a sense of orderly and productive purpose! Pah, I have purpose too you know. What really is wrong with just planting a row of lettuce seeds directly into the ground where we can all have a fair pop at them? And let's face it, a bit of digging wouldn't do you humans too much harm either. My friend Sustainable Pod is also up in arms (well we don't have those we only have a foot, which also happens to be our bellies - our bellies are rebelling!) over all this raised garden bed nonsense. Well I am slowly scaling the sides of your raised garden beds Goo, you better watch out for me! And when I'm done there I'm going on a hosta crawl with my mates to celebrate!
